Day 25: when you love them the most
I’ve already shown Dorsey snuggling while I sleep, keeping me company during my workday, and being playful. And while I do love it when he does all of those things, they aren’t when I love him the most.
Last spring, Dorsey suddenly developed a mysterious illness that made his eyes flick back and forth, his balance almost disappear, and his head tilt dramatically to the side. (By process of elimination, they think it was Idiopathic Vestibular Disease, aka “We Have No Idea Why, But Your Dog Is Really Dizzy disease.”)
During the worst part of his illness, Dorsey was barely able to walk and had to be carried up and down the stairs. Even now, he exhibits a slight head tilt, especially when very focused on something, like a treat. Whenever I notice the head tilt (like the slight one in this photo) or see him shaking his body on only three legs (totally off-balance), I remember how pitiful he was and love him all the more.
Here’s another photo of Dorsey with a slight head tilt. We were having a nice spring-like afternoon in the park with our friends Liz and Frankie.
